Nigerian Football Legends To Play Match To Encourage Election Participation
Given the current state of affairs in the country, it’s crucial that Nigerians turn out for the 2019 general elections.
While the electoral body is doing its part, an NGO, Tap Initiative has put plans in place to rally voters to the elections through a football match involving Nigerian legends.
Called #PVCFootball, the match is aimed at awakening political consciousness in Nigerian youth and encouraging them to participate fully in the upcoming elections – from voters’ registration to collection of voters’ cards, voting and ensuring that their votes count.
ThisDay reports that the match will be played between the 1994 and 2013 AFCON-winning Super Eagles. That means we should be expecting big names like Samson Siasia, Taribo West, Peter Rufai, John Obi Mikel, Joseph Yobo, among others.
The game will take place at the Legacy Pitch, inside National Stadium Surulere, Lagos on February 9. And the fans’ ticket to the match will be their permanent voter’s card (PVC). Speaking about the arrangement, the executive director of Tap Initiative, Martin Obono said:
“We believe this will create awareness for them to go for their PVCs.
The essential thing is that we want mass participation in the democratic process where every person takes part in deciding who should rule over them.”
